This time of year is a time of new resolutions and good intentions. It is the ideal time to consider making or revising your will and putting your personal affairs in order.
Last year we saw a plethora of celebrities who passed away, some of whom had had the foresight to address their mortality and leave a will, others of whom did not and therefore let their affairs to be sorted out according the intestacy rules that stipulate who gets what by reference to blood and marriage ties rather than with regard to wishes of an individual.
Last year may have been eventful for you too. It may be there have been marriages, divorces, deaths and births in the family. People may have moved on and relationships changed. Whatever your circumstances, even if you have a will, this may not reflect your current wishes or circumstances.
You may also be aware that your memory and health is not what it once was and you are relying more and more on family or friends to help with everyday tasks and other matters. If this is the case we would urge you to consider if this New Year is a time to put things in place to ensure that the people you trust can continue acting for you in helping you to make decisions as well as possibly making decisions for you where you cannot. Lasting Powers of Attorney can be made covering financial decisions and transactions as well as those decisions covering health and welfare. Any decisions made by an attorney must be in your best interests and not for personal benefit or gain. This can relieve a considerable amount of stress and difficulty should your health and mental state further deteriorate.
